Welcome to my new Blog!

Hi everyone!!! This is my debut blog for Nashvillegoesred.org and I'm very excited to share experiences with those of you who follow it. What a perfect time to kick it off since it's February, when we recognize heart month and "Go Red" for women. One thing we all have in common is concern for our hearts and those of the people near and dear to us. As a spokesperson for Nashvillegoesred.org, my mission is to help raise awareness of heart disease in women.  As I go to events and meet people touched by heart disease, I'll relay their stories to you through my blog. I hope to help educate, inspire and motivate you to do what you can to improve your heart health and just feel better, period!

I do believe that we meet people for a reason. For example, this past Friday I went to get a manicure before the Heart Gala. While chatting with some women wearing red that day, (Go Red Day-Feb. 5th) I ended up meeting Jennifer Orr, a woman who knows all too well about heart disease. She's lost her mother, and three siblings to our nation's number one killer. Her brother just died before Christmas. I can't imagine losing so many loved ones and especially when it's all to a disease that we now know we can do so much to prevent. Because of her family history, Jennifer told me she's always been very mindful of her health;watching her diet and keeping up with her cholesterol numbers, etc. Jennifer's young daughters are doing the same. They know they have to control what they can; diet, exercise, stress levels and even attitude. We both agreed that our outlook on life does make a difference in how we feel. It's an intangible, but important aspect of our total health. I'm not a doctor, but I've interviewed enough physicians and other medical professionals to know that our emotional health is an essential part of the whole person. I believe as part of that, we need to have relationships that are meaningful, and also to look forward to things and have fun, which brings me to the Heart Gala that was held Saturday night! What a beautiful evening at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center downtown. I'll write more about the party and hope to include a few photos I took that night in my next blog! Thanks for your interest in heart disease and I hope to hear from many of you in the coming weeks!
