Fall Focus

Baptist Hospital & the Hutton Hotel rolled out the red carpet Tuesday night. At least I think the women felt like they were treated very special when they arrived at the swanky hotel. It was a lovely event called "Revive: Fall Refresh."

Several hundred women of all ages and backgrounds registered for the program...the fourth in the series started one year ago. Back by popular demand, this refreshing health forum gave the ladies a chance to have their blood pressure checked. Tests to measure their body mass index and body fat were given, and even carotid artery screening was done by Saint Thomas's Community Medicine and Outpatient Imaging. Women could also schedule a mammogram.

As in the past, tasty appetizers and healthy treats were offered along with wine. Of course this is a huge draw for the event but the real gift to our audience was the opportunity to hear from six doctors and nurses who have invaluable experience and insights they shared with us.

They talked about  pressing issues they see in their practices, whether it was sleeping problems, diet and exercise challenges  along with breast cancer and genetic testing questions. Our audience wasn't shy!  We heard from many women who had great concerns about our health care system in general, but I believe they did receive very caring and compassionate responses from the physicians on the panel.

One of the points made by the doctors and I know this is so important; if you don't already have a strong relationship with your primary care physician, try to develop one. Always make a short, concise list of questions if you have concerns when you know you have a doctor's appointment so that when you leave, you feel as though you understand what you need to do.

Our next revive program is January 10th, once again at the Hutton, so stay tuned.
