February is sneaking up on us. Even though alot of us aren't crazy about winter, I always like it when February rolls around to make noise about heart disease. After all, it's still health enemy number one for women. In Tennessee alone, it kills nearly 20 thousand men and women each year. We rank number 44 in the nation, among the worst, in cardiovascular deaths.
With that in mind, it's hard to ignore heart month. And you can actually do something about preventing heart disease. The American Heart Association reports that up to 80 percent of cardiovascular disease may be prevented through healthy living. If you want to check out your personal heart health score in just a few minutes, go to http://www.mylifecheck.org, and learn how to improve yours.
As for the events on tap for Heart month: this Saturday, January 29th, is GO RED CONNECT. From 1-4 pm, at Macy's in Cool Springs Galleria, women are welcome to share their heart health stories on camera in a "casting call!" This gives someone a chance to become a spokesperson for the American Heart Association and Go Red for Women! The last two years in a row, this local event has "discovered" a local woman who was later chosen as a national spokesperson. It could be you!!!
Then there's National Wear Red Day. Look through your closet and find some great red blouse, sweater, jacket, or scarf to wear on February 4th. You'll notice you're not alone. I always see national newscasters, our local news anchors, and other community leaders in red on this day. Even buildings and locations "go red" with red exterior lighting and other red touches. Even the newborns at Saint Thomas Heart at Baptist Hospital and Middle Tennessee Medical Center will wear red knit caps made for the occasion by the wonderful volunteers at Saint Thomas, bless their hearts:)
Several other noteworthy heart events: of course the always lovely Heart Gala, again this year at the gorgeous Schermerhorn Symphony Center. It happens February 5th. The theme is "Stories of the Impossible," an Alice in Wonderland type fantasy. Men aren't excluded from our calendar, of course! There's another Men's Event at Belle Meade Country Club on Wednesday, February 9th at 5:30. Singer Lorrie Morgan will perform, and on Feb. 19th, the Rutherford Heart Ball in Murfreesboro at the Embassy Suites Hotel and Conference Center. If you haven't been there, it is a lovely hotel. I've emceed several heart luncheons there and always enjoy the people I meet as well. There's more to add to our calendars; back in Nashville, Rumours Wine and Art Bar in the 12 South neighborhood is launching their "Art for the Heart" month-long series benefiting the AHA. Feb. 11th is Rutherford County's Heart Luncheon sponsored by Middle Tn. Medical Center, and on Feb. 19th, a Heart and Soul Benefit at the Lofts at Werthan Mills. This event features wine tasting, a home tour and late night soiree for nearly 500 guests It, too, benefits the AHA.
So you see, there's a little something for everyone in February. Get out your calendar and please try to make at least one of these events and if you can't, at the very least, wear red, and check your heart health at http://www.mylifecheck.org.
Stay warm and Go Red!
