Refresh!

As much as I love the holidays, I'm always glad when they're over.  Especially when you take the holiday decorations down, everything looks so bare, the skies are gray, and it seems like the days are so long. But it's also a great time to reflect and think about what you can do to make your life better. Maybe it's not a resolution, per se, but like one of my friends suggested the other day, you pick a new word for the year.  Hers is hopeful.  I like the word refresh. And that's the theme for an event next Tuesday night (1-11-11) at the Hutton Hotel on West End in Nashville.  Baptist Hospital is sponsoring a Women's  Refresh event, for women only, of course, featuring five doctors, ranging from a cardiologist to an acupuncturist!  They're going to answer your questions about women's health.  But here's the kicker.  It's free!  And that includes access to the experts, wine, chocolates, appetizers and even massages!!!  You can't beat that for a fun Girls Night Out, can you?!?   The only hitch is you need to register by going to http://www.BaptistHospital.com/revive.  It starts at 5:30 and only lasts 'til 7:30 so it won't take up your entire evening.

We talked about the event yesterday on Newschannel 5's Talk of the Town. Host Meryll Rose talked about how events like this can help women focus on symptoms they hadn't recognized as problems before; especially busy working moms who can neglect themselves, tending to young children or aging parents. We can't ignore those nagging symptoms that don't go away.

Remember small changes can really add up. Don't feel like you have to go to the gym and work out for an hour to make a difference. It's amazing to me how a quick ten minute walk with my dog Jake can really wake me up and lift my spirits if I'm dragging in the morning. Then there are other mornings I do Zumba for an hour.  I try to listen to my body and sometimes, several short walks during the day are enough. If you're just beginning an exercise program, you don't want to overdo it and hurt yourself.  Also, when the stress feels like it's mounting, deep breathing helps.

Recognizing what's good in our lives is also vital. I know that I'm so grateful for family, friends, good health and this opportunity to share stories with you.   Happy 2011 and I hope to see you at the Hutton Tuesday night!
