Forget a little snow, and freezing temperatures. That's not enough to keep a good woman down! Actually, Baptist did have to do some juggling with the Hutton Hotel to move the date to Wednesday instead of Tuesday night because of the weather, but we still had a great crowd at our Revive Series. Our presenters, Baptist Hospital, Nashville Lifestyles and of course the beautiful Hutton Hotel, made it worth everyone's while. Complimentary wine, appetizers and desserts were part of the attraction but the real deal was an opportunity to ask medical experts questions about women's health; everything from heart disease questions to weight challenges to concerns about diabetes and menopause.
Our panel was fantastic; Dr. Shawnda Hollie, who practices internal medicine with Nashville Medical Group, Dietician Jenna Vandiver, also with Nashville Medical Group, Dawn Gibson, manager of the Metabolic Surgery Center at Baptist Hospital, Cardiologist Dr. Drew Pickett with Saint Thomas Heart at Baptist Hospital, Dr Catherine Stallworth, who practices physical medicine, rehab and integrative medicine with Nashville Medical Group and Omar Jutte, an RN and acupuncturist with St. Thomas Health Services Integrative Medicine team.
There was no shortage of good questions from our ladies. One piece of advice I think we all took away from the event has to do with grocery shopping in a healthy way. Everyone is pressed for time and budgets can make it challenging to select the healthy items, but dietician Jenna Vandiver told us to try and shop along the perimeter of the store; anotherwords, produce, dairy, meats (lean of course!) and grains. Makes sense, doesn't it? She also suggested that we buy fresh, frozen vegetables versus prepackaged, prepared foods. A young lady who's going to be heading off to college in a few months asked about how she can avoid the "freshman ten" (pounds). Jenna's answer: plan ahead. Plan your exercise with friends, plan your grocery shopping so you're not just grabbing whatever looks good at the time. When we're in a hurry, we often make bad choices.
Our next revive series will be in the spring; May 3rd, at 6pm, at the Hutton. Mark your calendar and bring a friend.
Also, Saint Thomas Heart at Baptist Hospial is hosting a Heart Healthy Cooking School, "Welcome Home: Italian Style" on Thursday, Feb. 24th at noon at Baptist Hospital. You need to register in advance by calling 800-588-3270.
Be sure to try and take advantage of these programs. It's ok to think about yourself and take steps to feel better, inside and out! Stay warm everyone:)
